All about tiles – A Brief History

Tile according to the Wikipedia, “a tile is a manufactured piece of hard-wearing material such as ceramic, stone, metal, or even glass, generally used for covering roofs, floors, walls, showers, or other objects such as tabletops”.

Tile can be classified into 3 categories, depending upon the materials it is made up of.

  1. Ceramic Tile : The cheapest kind of tile, it is made up of clay, gypsum, sand and shale, and mixed into a material called bisque. The bisque is then given a form and put in a kiln. After a the initial blast, glaze is applied in any color desired on the tile and fired again. Ceramic tiles can be smooth or glossy, can be used for flooring and on walls too.
  2. Quarry Tile : Quarry tile came from quarries, initially, where the tile was cut away, ground, and polished. But now manufactures use the extrusion method of making a clay tile that is as hard as natural stone. A quarry tile is rough and it provides a good grip, making it perfect for flooring option.
  3. Stone : Marble and granite tile is very popular recently . Though these natural stone tiles tend to cracks easily,but are used extensively for flooring for their natural texture.

Tiles have a rich history. Early clay and mud tiles are dated at seven thousand years old. Decorative tiles found in Egypt date back to 4000 BC.

Throughout the next few centuries the Romans, the Greeks, China, Persia, India, , among a few other countries It spread quickly traveling from the Asia and Middle East to the European countries and then to America.

In the 1920’s, technology improved rapidly , decreasing the time for mounting tile is small places. More durable tiles were manufactured.

The 1950s was the growth period for ceramic tiles as they were used extensively in homes, all over.

By 1980, North America became an important market for tile manufacturers.

The last few decades have seen technology have transformed the tile industry. Porcelain and ceramic floor tiles use the digital ink-jet technology to add texture and stone like look to the tiles.

Before the early 1900s, tiles were manufactured to decorate important public buildings and for the elite. Today, tiles are affordable and available for everyone and the design possibilities are endless.
